Some have argued that the song was spiritual but secretly about the underground railroad. That would have been odd for the Choctaw Nation citizen to be singing as a freeman.  The song has very simple Lyrics.

It is a Christian song, that is why there is the mention of the Jordan River and Angels. If you have any doubts about this, Willis, other hit songs sung by the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University, were “Steal Away to Jesus” and “The Angels are Coming”.  Swing Low Sweet Chariot, is referring to a Bible story about Elijah, who while walking with Elisha, caused the Jordan River to part so that they could cross. On the other side the fire chariot of Israel and horses of fire separated them and Elijah went up to Heaven on a whirlwind. The parting of the river was the last miracle that Elijah preformed. The chariot of Israel could be interpreted by some as Angels. Yet it says horsemen not angels.

Most people do not read the rest of the 2 Kings book of the Bible. In fact at the time of Wallace Willis, most people didn’t read the Bible or read at all and the stories were told to them.  Elijah and Elisha had walked to Bethel and then Jericho. Twice Elijah told him to part but twice Elisha refused to leave him. So they went together.

Elijah had made a promise to Elisha that he if he could witness how he was taken to heaven that a double portion of his spirit would be granted to Elisha. He did witness this event and also picked up Elijah’s mantel and used it to part the river once again. Why am I telling you what happened after? Because of the irony. Elisha had preformed Elijah’s last miracle and the prophets of Jericho had seen this they bowed before him and gave him 50 strong men in addition to slaves. Elisha’s second miracle was to purify spring water with a magic jar of salt. His third miracle was to send two she bears to maul 42 children for calling him bald. These were not good men. I would not assume Heaven was the destination for Elijah who was picked up by the Fire Chariot of Israel.

Saying Chariot of Israel and the horses of fire is often thought to be angels even though that is not what is says. This is as common a misreading as the famous “snake” who “tricked” Eve in the book of Genesis. It is actually a serpent not a snake, and it does not trick her, it tells her the truth. After Adonai, (the god in the Garden of Eden Story) discovered that the humans have eaten off the Tree of Knowledge, the serpent is cursed. It’s a serpent a snake? Sometimes but in Hebrew this is worded as Sefirot/Sepheroth which in Jewish Mysticism is the ten pointed Tree of Life. It is artistically shown as a snake like thing just as in modern times a heart is a symbol of love even though all emotions are processed in the brain and the heart is a blood pumping muscle. We know better yet our symbols persist.  People were probably not meant to take the, talking snake in the garden with magic trees, story literally. Israel is the name given to Jacob, form the story Jacob and Esau, and it denoted his bloodline for the twelve tribes. It was not a piece of land. Jacob who lied to everyone in his life including his own blind father, his twin brother, and both his wives, wrestled with and extorted a blessing from an angel. Think about it, no human can wrestle an angel. Jacob and Esau was a metaphor about the struggles of good and evil. Esau came out first. He was favored by the Father. Jacob, who was favored by his Mother came out while holding on to the heel of his brother. This is a Hebrew phrase that means a trickster and liar. When Jesus said in the book of John:

“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
