Bush breaks rank to boost independent’s bid
________________________________________
WASHINGTON — President George Bush gave a boost to Connecticut senator Joe Lieberman’s re-election bid as an independent this week by taking the rare step of refusing to endorse the Republican candidate running for Lieberman’s US senate seat.
It is highly unusual for a sitting president not to endorse a senate candidate from his own party and suggests the depth of the political machinations over Lieberman’s seat after his defeat in last week’s Democratic primary by Ned Lamont, a well-financed challenger running on an antiwar platform.
“We are not making any endorsement in Connecticut. The Republican party of Connecticut has suggested that we not make an endorsement in that race and so we’re not,” said White House spokesman Tony Snow.
Lieberman, the 2000 Democratic vice-presidential nominee, has vowed to launch an independent bid to retain his seat. A Quinnipiac University poll yesterday showed Lieberman leading Lamont among registered state voters by 49% to 38%. Republican Alan Schlesinger attracted support from 4%.
Among likely voters, Lieberman was supported by 53%, compared with Lamont’s 41% and Schlesinger’s 4%.
Lieberman, a nationally known centrist who has been criticised by many Democrats for supporting the war in Iraq and a perceived closeness to Bush, lost the August 8 Democratic primary by 10000 votes.
Political pundits say the primary was evidence of voters’ frustration with the war and predict it could have national political ramifications.
Lieberman’s advantage in the general election comes from broad support among unaffiliated and Republican voters.
Fifty-three percent of likely voters polled said he deserves to be re-elected, and nearly half doubted that Lamont, a political novice who founded a company that wires college campuses for cable television, has enough experience to be senator.
“Lieberman’s support among Republicans is nothing short of amazing. It more than offsets what he has lost among Democrats,” said poll director Douglas Schwartz.
“As long as Lieberman maintains this kind of support among Republicans, while holding a significant number of Democratic votes, the veteran senator will be hard to beat.
“Lamont’s Democratic primary win was based on a very small percentage of voters statewide,” Schwartz said.
“He must expand beyond this base if he is going to beat Lieberman.”
Lamont is the wealthy founder of a cable television company in Greenwich and great-grandson of legendary JPMorgan chairman Thomas Lamont. The senate race was his first run for statewide office. Reuters, Bloomberg

Well, maybe we could hope that the neo-cons would break ranks with the republican party and be seen for the true fanatics they really are then they would lose their base and die. Political parties have come and gone, maybe this could be their time.
