Is society progressing?

I posted this as an argument on the myspace immigration group, which prompted a huge debate of sane people vs communist untermenschen. Below, slightly edited:

What progress do you speak of? The progress of living in a large city with high crime rates? The progress of purchasing products that break in a few months? The progress of not being able to eat the fish in the local rivers? The progress of having to pay an uncountable number of taxes? The progress of being in perpetual debt? The progress of needing lawyers to determine innocence and truth in a court of law? The progress of passing laws designed to punish thought? The progress of inventing reality instead of observing it? The progress of racial strife due to multiculturalism? The progress of game-show type elections for public office? The progress of children being diagnosed with "Attention Deficit Disorder" because they don't enjoy sitting still in place learning about something they aren't interested in? The progress of having most of our time spent working in some menial job? The progress of music designed to make as much money as possible? The progress of healthy women wanting to abort healthy babies? The progress of most people being overweight? The progress of meaningless art? The progress of art that celebrates defeat? The progress of Christianity? The progress of people playing video games for most of their waking hours? The progress of food with ingredients that you've never heard of before? The progress of rivers being damned up and ecologies destroyed because it is economically beneficial? The progress of brown skies over cities? The progress of the Republicans and Democrats? The progress of inane television sitcoms? The progress of deviant pornography? The progress of passivity? The progress of technology that ends up making us do more work? The progress of materialism? The progress of FEAR, INSECURITY, AND DOMESTICATION?

Some good points, but as always Iconoclast, we're worlds apart. I guess let's just be glad we can see eye-to-eye on a few of these points.

I don't consider myself an anarcho-primitivist. I see both as means to ends; anarchy allows society to be destroyed, corrupt governments eroded, and norms to reset, and primitivism destroys industrial society. I wouldn't care if people had computers and cd players if they could be produced without industrial society.

Since we're in our industrial society, I wonder if techniques could be developed that allows us to retain worthwhile technologies without needing an industrial system. I'd like to be able to listen to music without having to rely on a live symphony or band, for instance, but I'd rather not have 5-9 freedom jobs in bureaucracy land.

And I didn't delete myself, the mods did. I haven't made another one, either, although I have a troll account.

thats kind of a catch 22, because of the population of the planet if you want any product enough other people are going to want it that you need industry to create it, I think the greater question would be whether you can have industry that is non-invasive to nature, I think that would be the ultimate goal for myself as an anarcho-capitalist with a green streak. send me a FR with the troll account http://www.myspace.com/top_e_koms
