I've been called a "Contrarian"
I've been called a "Contrarian"
I've had a nice battle going on in my local weekly paper with a Bush and Isreal apologist, for the last 4 or 5 weeks.
The tactic this fellow uses is ad hominem - attacking the person instead of the message. In fact he ignored most of the points I made (Isreal's 3 Billion in "aid", media concentration and cross ownership by parent companies who also make arms, appartheid in Palestine, etc) and instead focussed on "poor little Isreal", having to defend itself.
It's all good, because it makes me work harder in terms of making sure my arguments are sound.
But his initial response to me had him coining me as a Contrarian, which in a later exchange in the paper he expands on it saying that people who espouse the kind of vocabulary (that we here on Anti-Neocons, for example) "...without consciously affiliating as Leftists, are termed Contrarians."
Anyone else ever hear of that term?

Nope and I sure and hel ldont assosiate with Leftist. Thats what Neocons are a bunch of X-democrats who followed the theocons of the religious right into power as "republicans" they just side with whoever is in control but always with the same philosophy just a new name.

Yeah, I know, screw him anyway and his terminology. The way I see it, it boils down to wanting peace and freedom anyway. I can't believe there are so many people who still see things in black and white, left and right.
This same guy pulled the Protocols of Zion crap, and eventually attempted to paint me as a Communist - dancing around it, anyway.
Man some people are so full of it!

I have, sometimes I consider myself one.
In short, no pun intended, when everyone is buying, you're selling. When everyone is selling, you're buying. You're a contrarian. Contrarians have an inside joke, it's the "smart money". In any case, most likely, wether concious or not, I would have called him on something else. It sounds like he was using the opposite of a "glittering generalities" technique.
Glittering generalities are emotionally appealing words so closely associated with highly valued concepts and beliefs that they carry conviction without supporting information or reason.
So he calls you a contrarian, as if that's negative. First, he is confusing what is normally an economic term with your simple rebuttal based on facts that he's stumped on. An ad hominem attack would be the tried and true, "you're anti-semetic". He'll save that one for last.
Call him on it.
Use words that I suspect he knows, that he thinks you don't. Let him hang himself.
"if you're going to stoop to name calling, glittering generalities, and you won't address simple questions, then I'm wasting my time".
Now you're using the technique, deflecting his attempt to frame the debate, going back on topic, and associating him with a negative conotation. If he calls you on it, tell him the truth.
"Well, I have to admit I've been reading the Hasbara manual, are you familiar with that?"
Yes = That's a propaganda manual, have you studied it?
No = That's a propaganda manual used to teach Israeli activists how to defend Israel in world opinion and you've never heard of it? I guess I really am wasting my time.
Here's an exchange with a zionist propagandist, you will note how other techniques are used, so that he never addresses a single point. It's clever, but only works on the unsuspecting.

''the infant is not bold without divine aid''
He did dance around the anti-Semitic finger pointing, by observing my "obsession" with Isreal. Which is bullshit anyway, because a letter I'd written a few months earlier made no mention whatsoever.
So my next letter I called him out and point blank asked him if he was insinuating I was an anti-Semite. And to drive it home even further, I mentioned that there are some Arabs who consider themselves Semites.
I got a lot of compliments from people on that letter.
