And for all the money that the US has spent in Haiti – some $800m during the past five years – there are reasons to believe that its actions have not always improved things. Subsidies paid to American farmers mean 75 per cent of rice eaten in Haiti is from the US – in a country that grew all its own until the 1980s. The result is unemployment for farmers, and mass urban migration – to the very areas that were devastated last week. If nothing else, that history has galvanised a sense that the moment has to be seized.

Did you see where he was carrying the one kid who was bleeding from his head? He practically handed the kid over to anyone running and put down his camera in the process. The camera is probably gone considering they were looting the store right in front of him.
photo op  all for ratings. there just reminding you that you saw it first on CNN.

Hmm. I notice a pattern here.
New Orleans -> Katrina -> Black people -> deport
Haiti -> earth quake -> Black people -> deport

The thing is the people are desperate. It was already a poor country to start with and now this.

At what point do we stop being human? “If we don’t have compassion for others, then we don’t deserve to be humans”. If you care about Palestine and others who are suffering, then it seems to reason that you would care for these people too. We have compassion for all people everywhere regardless if others are selective.

It doesn’t negate that it is the right thing to do even if some are only doing it because it’s trendy. Some may have also just become aware. Why assume the worst of people? It takes the same amount of energy to assume the best. I don’t know what we should do or what our role should be but wanting to help is still the right thing to do.

I'm working on trying not to be so negative, honestly. I do hope those helping people are doing it out of the kindness of their hearts and not just to be trendy or to get media attention.

Too true

:) Maybe a political forum isn’t the best place to bring up assuming the best in people. lol. Actions and intentions of people do matter. People can do the right things for the wrong reasons and people can do the wrong things for the right reasons.

Going around and assuming the worst in everyone is as silly as people who completely avoid any negative emotion it’s just not natural. It is a good idea though to surround yourself with people you aspire to be like. I tell my 15yr old son this all the time. You can never bring the wrong crowd up they will only ever bring you down. If you hang out with scum, you look like scum or you are scum and eventually they will have an effect on you. Online it is harder to be selective.

People who send money to charities they have confidence in aren’t stupid people. They are people who are trying to help make the world a better place in the way they know how. The same way a person who only shares encouraging words to a friend who is having a bad day. It isn’t much but it can and does make a difference.
