The Settlement Question
by Zainab al-Ashkar

For decades the Palestinian struggle has been at the forefront of many a head of state's minds as well as a solution to the issue, and while many are writing articles suggesting new ways this conflict may be solved, this is not one of them.

Many factors agitate this delicate and sensitive issue. Religion, politics, even race has played a part in the culmination of this issue and each has served as a justification for many atrocities committted in the region, suicide bombings, ethnic cleansing, and perhaps one of the most offensive and crucial issues at hand today--the creation of expansionist colonialist settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as several other pieces of land taken from Israel's neighbours, like Syria's Golan Heights and Lebanon's Shebaa Farms. While settlements in the Gaza Strip have since been evacuated and dismantled, the previously aforementioned settlements have not only not been dismantled or evacuated, they have been steadily expanding. Some new settlements spring up every few months in the occupied territories, despite the protest of the international community and at the expense of native Palestinian residents. These settlements as well as the occupation and annexation of the Palestinian territories have long fueled the anger that motivated the resistance movement in Palestine, yet so few in the world seem to want to bring attention to this plight, let alone try to do anything about it. This indifference to the Arab Palestinian plight, as well as pressure and ultimatums constantly being leveled at them by the Westen powers, plus the labeling of legitamite resistance organizations such as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine(PFLP) as "terrorist" organizations, has recently convinced many in the occupied territories to not only become complacent to this occupation, but to give up and give in altogether. Peace talks have failed. The trappings of an independent nation brought about by the Oslo Accords are but empty titles who still must be subservient to the Zionist government. The president of Palestine is a figurehead with no real power to make life changing decisions for his people, the security forces only yet another tool with which the Zionist government uses to oppress the Palestinian people. Prior to the implementation of these disastrous accords, was a complex web of resistance groups, although operating independently, all vying for the same goal: liberation of the Palestinian people, and, in the short-term, putting the Palestinian struggle on the map. Many of these operations to acheive the latter goal are boldly etched in the annals of history--ranging from the hijacking of jetliners to the surgical strikes on Israeli forces within the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel proper, as well as operations abroad against Israeli operatives serving under civilian cover, such as the 1972 Munich operation, in which 9 blows were affected to the Zionist oppressors, and the whole world woke up the the struggle of our people. Although the Zionists would paint these acts with a very different brush, this issue is irrelevant. Little attention has been paid to our struggle, many watch night after night as smaller-scale atrocities like Darfur and Bosnia scream across our televisions at night, celebrities drilling it into our heads that "these people need our help" and "that with a few dollars, you can help feed a starving child" as well as many concerts and events dedicated to raising money and awareness for these peoples' plights, yet words about this 62 year old struggle has yet to pass through a Hollywood celebrity's lips. This indifference, coupled with the US government's tacit blessing of Israel no matter how much pain they inflict upon their neighbours, along with the fact that the US waited only until 1948 and the creation of the State of Israel to even choose an ally in this region, have convinced me that a new strategy is needed in this conflict in order to not only bring the issue back to the table, but to remind the world we will not stand by and let what's left of our land be destroyed and colonized in order to further the interests of an entity that has no business in our lands with our people. With all the new measures being taken to "eliminate terrorism" as well as the pressure on the Palestinians to conform to American interests and give up entirely so the Zionists can colonize the rest of our lands and "fulfill a Biblical prophecy(like the US government has any business forcing their religious rubbish upon the rest of the world's populace)" there has been few if any options left to wrest world attention from a failed peace process that only serves White/Western/Zionist interests and back to the real issue at hand--the continuing and increasing suffering and expulsion of the Palestinian people!

Few options existed, while the peaceniks platter on about "Israel's right to exist" and "a nuclear Iran is much more the issue now" yet the settlements continued to expand and families continue to stream out of Occupied Palestine into neighbouring countries that can't afford them or to the Western ones that don't want them and Zionism wins yet again another battle against their "half-breed" Arab enemy. I was exploring options one day as well as watching the coverage of the evictions of several families from Jerusalem's Sheik Jarrah neighbourhood when the idea came to me--there is another way the resistance can bring the real issue back to the front of the international stage as well as inflict some staggering blows to the Zionist imperialist occupiers that constantly terrorize the neighbouring Palestinian villages as well as many Western journalists who come to the region to gather unbiased information on the situation. These settlements have long been a stain on the fabric of Palestinian culture, racist colonies where if an Arab comes within even 400 feet of them, he can be shot without question, and where the residents go out into the surrounding areas and commit acts of violence and vandalism against the Arabs without so much as a slap on the wrist from the Israeli authorities, or condemnation from the US government. Not only do they dot the Palestinian countryside they infect it, and steal valuable resources as well as import non-native residents into the land that may and usually do not have the same respect for the land that the natives -the Arabs- do.
The idea is simple yet effective--hit the settlements. Resistance fighters and angry civilians surround these little racially pure enclaves. Many have endless caches of weapons and munitions at their disposal. Not only this, but the settlers do not have any qualms about using their weapons against the Palestinians, not to mention the foreigners amongst them who are legitimate targets simply because they chose the wrong side. So why not hit them? Resistance fighters in the Gaza Strip hit the surrounding cities in southern Israel with rockets, and it's a definite yes that their comrades in the West Bank have rockets too, so why not start doing to these colonies what they do to Sderot? I have yet to hear it on the news, so there is a possibility that this has not been attempted or the occurrences have been few and far between. Yet any time White non-Arab people die, it's a big deal in the West, so a rocket-blackened settlement would have definitely made the airwaves in my neck of the woods. None have yet, so it leads me to believe this option has not yet been explored. So let me be the first, if this is the case, to present it. It should be also explored that the launch of yet a third intifada should also be an option, as well as a massive rebellion and uprising amongst the Arabs living inside Israel. Suicide bombings should be ruled out. These do not serve our cause any good, and young men often die leaving many loved ones behind. Religion should not be used to justify these uprisings, as it is a tool currently used by the Zionists to justify their oppression of our people, and it does no good to confirm their claims, besides this is not a religious affair, this is simply a realization of a age-old sadistic Zionist dream--expulsion and annihilation of the half-breed-mongrel Arabs, who, by their logic, should never have been allowed to live in the first place. They attempt to trace our lineage back to not only Ishmael, a "bastard son created by Hagar and Abraham", but to the Philistines and also Amalek, a descendant of Esau, the hated brother of Jacob. Their scriptures have stated that God had instructed the Israelites to exterminate the Amalekites, but they left a few alive after going "soft" on them. They feel they are not only justified in our annihilation, but that they are doing God's service. Peace cannot be acheived with people like this in power. They only want to destroy us per their religious texts. They want to destroy us per their desire for a pure nation inhabited solely by their own kind. They want to destroy us to insure their security and hegemony in the region and to eliminate perceived "fears" that we desire to "push them all into the sea". They are very motivated. We must remind them that we too are very motivated human beings and we have a very real emotion and desire to survive and prosper in this world, and we will not lie down and die quietly. We will resist. We must remind them every step of the way that every time they step on us they will be stepped on too, and stomped into the dust. Then and only then may they realize their place is alongside us, not on top of our graves. They will only be welcome if they welcome us with arms open, not with arms bearing arms. If they choose this path, then we must resist them each mile until the finish. Until then, the colonies should not be permitted to exist in their current state, and if they will not dismantle them willingly, then we shall dismantle the colonies for them.

Very well written, although I wish there were a more peaceful solution. I am thinking that it is going to take Israel overstepping itself to end this. If and when Israel strikes Iran, and Iran retaliates, thjis is not the time for Palestinian resistance to sit idly by. It is the time for ALL resistance groups to hit back at Israel so that they cannot effectively fight all fronts at the same time. And then any other Arab countries who have any balls at all should also strike back. Again, I would only condone this if they attack Iran, half measures will be met with certain failure. I still don't see why they would attack Iran, they could not effectively contain Hamas or Hezbollah, how can they subdue Iran? YOu have to keep in mind that the USA will get involved because Iran will likely retaliate to American and Israeli sources, and if they don't the Israeli's will just pull another USS Liberty, so you can count on that. It has to be all the Arab countries standing up at the same time or they might as well jus pack up and go home.

Hey, I got the solution, All Palestinians should just move to Germany en masse! They sent you this problem, now make it theirs!

Just because they can't doesn't mean they won't try. Believe me, before long there will be another fight, Zionists live off the blood of their neighbours, and I'll bet that this debacle will come to a head in one of two ways--either a war with Iran or a nuclear attack on Syria....or more ominously the war with Iran doesn't go well and they're losing too many Israelis so they just fire off a nuke toward Damascus. I honestly believe in my heart there will be a sneak attack on either Iran or Syria, most likely Syria because of it's close proximity and the Israelis have long had their eyes on the territory.

I have a hard time believing the people who organized inquisitions & the Turkish Nakba are incapable of acting out in severely demented ways against the Palestinians nowadays. I do not believe it will slow them down either, at least when Israel attacks like an idiot the whole world will know the truth about the vicious evil that goes on because clearly Iran has much more restraint.

just reading it reminds Apartheid in South Africa and other colonized countries with similar treatment. Zionists (or Rothdschild (originally Bauer) oligarch) never wanted peace with Palestinians from Day One. The dream is about "Greater Israhell" to conquer the whole Middle East. Should the whole Palestinian be exterminated, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Yemen,Turkey are next. For sixty years, Zionists proved they are not trustworthy and heavily depend on external aids through scams.
