Scores of copies of Anne Frank's "Diary of a Young Girl" kept in public libraries across Tokyo have been vandalized, officials said Friday, sparking alarm amid a rightward shift in Japan's politics, AFP reports.

Pages in at least 250 copies of the diary or publications containing biographies on Anne Frank, Nazi persecution of Jews and related materials have
been torn, the council of public libraries in the capital said.

More than a dozen books have also been damaged at libraries in two other nearby areas, media reported.

"We have complaints from five of (Tokyo's 23) wards so far but I don't yet know exactly how many libraries are affected," Satomi Murata, the head of the council, told AFP. "We don't know why this happened or who did it."

"Each book had 10-20 pages torn out, leaving it unusable," said Kaori Shiba, the archives director at the central library in Shinjuku ward, where 39 books were vandalised at three libraries.

Toshihiro Obayashi, deputy director of the central library in the Suginami area, said 119 books have been damaged at 11 of its 13 public libraries, adding nothing like this had ever happened before.

"Each and every book, which comes up under the index of Anne Frank, has been damaged at our library," Obayashi said.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, the US-based international Jewish rights group, said on its website it was shocked and concerned.

"The geographic scope of these incidents strongly suggest an organized effort to denigrate the memory of the most famous of the 1.5 million Jewish children murdered by the Nazis in the World War II Holocaust," Abraham Cooper, the center's associate dean, said in a statement.

"Only people imbued with bigotry and hatred would seek to destroy Anne's historic words of courage, hope and love in the face of impending doom," Cooper added. "We are calling on Japanese authorities to step up efforts to identify and deal with the perpetrators of this hate campaign."

The diary, written by a Jewish girl who lived in Amsterdam during the time of the Holocaust, was added to the UN Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Memory of the World Register in 2009.

Anne Frank, a German Jew born in Frankfurt in 1929, documented her family's experiences hiding in concealed rooms during the German occupation of the Netherlands where they settled in 1933.

They were caught and sent to Nazi concentration camps. Anne and her sister died of typhus in 1945.

Yasumi Iwakami, a freelance journalist who writes on social causes in Japan, tweeted there had been sporadic "delusional" arguments about the existence of a Jewish conspiracy surrounding the Holocaust.

"But violence has not presented itself to this extent before," he said, calling the incidents the "advent of crude anti-Semitism".

The spree comes amid criticism of a rightwards shift in Japanese politics under nationalist Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with a recent volley of provocative comments about Japan's wartime past that have sparked accusations of revisionism by China and South Korea.

Largely homogenous Japan does not have a very big Jewish community, with the vast majority of people believing in an admixture of imported Buddhism and indigenous Shintoism.

Seems to be a lot of things to think about. We need to know how many books, how many libraries, their locations, when each loaction was hit and how much damage was done in each location. Feasibly there may be enough Jews living in Tokyo, Japan at the moment. It just doesn't strike me as a place Jews often go. Perhaps I am wrong. If there is security footage inside or outside or near any of these libraries, that would be very key.

The Israeli embassy in Japan said on Wednesday it would donate 300 copies of Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl to Tokyo libraries after hundreds of copies were damaged.

News of the defacement of the books, which tells the tale of a young Jewish girl who fell victim to the Holocaust, sent shockwaves worldwide and sparked alarm amid a rightward shift in Japan's politics.

The embassy and the Jewish Community of Japan will present the copies on Thursday to the capital's residential ward of Suginami, whose libraries were a main target of the vandalism, embassy officials said. "We have offered the donation that can make up for the copies damaged," the embassy said in a statement. "Her diary is useful to deepen understanding of humanitarian views concerning the Holocaust and related incidents," it said. "We believe that the people who took the hideous action will be brought to justice."

A total of 121 books were damaged at 11 of 13 public libraries in Suginami, a library official said.

I thought you were referring to activities within the subject of the OP, Tokyo, not locations in general. Yes, everyone knows that Jews stage a lot of "hate crimes" for their benefit.

Museum to host exhibit honoring Anne Frank

HIROSHIMA – A memorial museum in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, will host an exhibit to mark the 85th anniversary of Anne Frank’s birth.

The Holocaust Education Center will host the exhibition between March 15 and May 3, according to the museum.

News of the exhibition follows the emergence of mysterious vandalism cases that have defaced more than 300 copies of Frank’s diary and related books in libraries across Tokyo.

Makoto Otsuka, the museum’s director, said staff had planned the exhibit before the vandalism incidents were reported. “It’s important to never forget the past and recognize the truth,” he said.

Last month, after the destruction of the books first came to light, Frank’s cousin, Buddy Elias, 88, sent Otsuka an email from Switzerland, saying he was shocked by the news.

When Otsuka phoned him to “apologize on behalf of the Japanese people,” Elias said that he wanted to create an opportunity for people to learn more about Frank.

The exhibition will feature panels introducing Frank’s life and objects that belonged to her family, the museum said.

After it closes, it will tour churches and other venues in 10 prefectures.

The Holocaust Education Center was established in 1995 and has attracted over 130,000 visitors so far.

The museum’s permanent exhibition features the typewriter used by Frank’s father, Otto, to transcribe her diary after the war.

On JapanToday, this incident generated at least 3-4 articles, as well as a weekly poll asking whether holocaust denial should be a crime!

As posters were speculating left and right about who the culprits were, I believe I was the only one on that forum to suggest it could be a false flag, but then I was banned AGAIN!!!

Anyway, I think it only involved 31 public libraries within 5 wards, that can be easily reached using only a couple of train lines. I am pretty sure this is rather easy for one person to do. These books are not inspected daily, so who knows how long it took to carry out.

It's not that it was all fake. It's contents were exaggerated and added onto by other authors thereby embellishing certain details.

Tokyo police make arrest in Anne Frank vandalism

Unemployed man admits involvement in damage to hundreds of copies of Holocaust diary around Japanese capital

okyo police reportedly arrested a city resident in connection with the vandalism of hundreds of copies of “The Diary of Anne Frank” in the Japanese capital’s libraries.

The suspect, identified in the announcement Wednesday of his arrest as an “unemployed man in his 30s,” in a statement admitted to some involvement in the vandalism of the books in February, according to Rocket News 24, citing the Japanese-language MSN Sankei News.

Police arrested the man on March 7 for entering a bookstore in the Ikebukuro district to hang a poster without permission. It is not known what the posters said.

Footage from the store’s security cameras reportedly showed the same man wandering back and forth inside the same bookstore through sections dealing with the Holocaust, including the day that some of the damage occurred.

Police spotted the man in security footage from other locations where vandalism occurred, according to Sankei. They confiscated his cellphone and computer.

Pages were ripped from at least 265 copies of the diary and other related books in public libraries and bookstores.
