Been away for awhile, but just wanted to say this is a great summary of how horrible these bombings were. I'm going to be spreading this around.

The Allies during WWII were a bunch of hypocrites who punished the Axis as war criminals while ignoring their obvious war crimes in their destroying cities full of civilians in Germany and Japan. Heck, they even bombed France pretty bad, which contrary to popular belief, led to a lot of French angst against the Brits and Americans.

Richard Maybury's "World War II" has some great info on this topic, including the preconditions re: pearl harbor, the "unconditional surrender" demands, and the needless nuclear attacks.

"The view of Admiral William D. Leahy, Truman's own chief of staff, was typical:

the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. ... My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make wars in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children"

I taught my students that the us dropped the bomb to avoid splitting Japan with Russia he ay they had to in Germany. I am surprised Truman dit as he stated before hand he did not want to o it and even dropped leaflets in Japanese telling them it was coming and to get out of town.

No leaflets were dropped on Nagasaki. Nagasaki was not even the intended target. they just pulled an audible because of bad weather.
