House votes to extend Patriot Act

Post by Iconoclast » Thu Jul 21, 2005 9:13 pm

Following more than hours of debate, the House approved the measure 257-171.

The bulk of the back-and-forth centered on language making permanent 14 of 16 provisions that had four-year sunset, or expiration, provisions under the original law, which Congress passed overwhelmingly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The bill also proposed 10-year extensions to the two other provisions set to expire on December 31, one allowing roving wiretaps and another allowing searches of library and medical records. They were the focus of most of the controversy as members plowed through the main legislation and 18 amendments.
The House has much less crooks in it because it is a less prestigious job, and the Senate will probably have around 5 dissenters at maximum.

Does anybody know where we can see who voted for and against the Patriot Act yesterday? I found the votes to the original one in 2001 but I guess they don't have the new one up yet. Let me know if you find it. I'm curious stuck to their guns and voted against it.

I can tell you Paul Ryan (R-WI) did. I'm on his mailing list so I can track his idiocy I geuss. I'm ashamed to be a part of District 1. We suck ass.

It's been a while since I've read a whole lot about the Patriot Act. We've still got a Senate vote right? If so, I'm gonna give a call to good ole' Russ and tell him to try and influence other Senate members to vote "No".
