we get hit by hurricanes more than any place on earth. FL as a state is hit more the NC but Hatteras as a town is hit more times than any other town in the world by hurricanes and tropical storms. This issue is not about that though, it is about regular NE wind causes flooding. The DOT has created a bowl by pushing sand off the road on both side because they are lazy. the water today was not coming over the dune...that happened last night..it was just sitting in the man made bowl unable to run off the road.
NC is the only state that does nothing. All the other try between 1 to 7 methods of stopping erosion. Hatteras is unlike the rest of the east coast in that it has huge waves. 12 feet today and that is without a storm. look at www.surfkdh.com we have the wave action to carry sand over the reefs, it is the tide the takes the sand back out and is caught by the reef like an underwater sand fence. it does not work in places without waves but we have them.
